For the third time, a
female aspirant has lost in the Student Representative Council (SRC) presidential
election of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).
The only female
presidential candidate among seven aspirants in the 2019 GIJ-SRC presidential
election, Louisa Kwakye has lost after much anticipation.
The election which was rescheduled
after students protested over delay in printing ballot papers, has been held and
the Electoral commission has released provisional results.
Joseph
Abezuke emerged winner with 424 votes against six others, among whom Louisa got
348.
On the newly scheduled day of the election, Friday, April 28, a final year student of the institute was arrested for allegedly attempting to place 19 already printed ballot papers for one candidate in the ballot box.
The first two female students to contest in GIJ-SRC presidential election, Nana Akua Twumwaa Asare and Stephanie Adenyo lost in the 2014 and 2015 elections respectively.
In an interesting development, the University of Development Studies has elected its first ever female SRC president to steer the affairs of the Student Representative Council (SRC). Zeinab Mohammed Denderi won the Nyankpala Campus run-off elections by a slim margin of 10 votes.
