André Ayew has been made the new captain of the Black Stars by head coach Kwasi Appiah ahead of the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Ayew replaces Asamoah Gyan, as captain of the Black Stars.
Gyan, who has captained the Black Stars for a record seven years “has been elevated to the position of ‘General Captain’.”
Subsequently, Kwadwo Asamoah has been named the deputy captain.
President of the GFA-NC Dr. Kofi Amoah has called on all stakeholders and citizens to support the transition whilst the Black Stars prepare their assault and conquest of Africa at AFCON 2019.
The captaincy of the team sparked controversy when Gyan walked away from the National Team after he was replaced as the captain of the Black Stars.
He had been captain of the national team since 2012, leading the Black Stars four major international tournaments.
But he rescinded his decision to retire from international football less than 48 hours later after President Nana Akufo-Addo had met Kwesi Appiah over the matter and spoken to him.
President Nana Akufo-Addo had also met with the Minister for Youth and Sports, the President of the GFA Normalisation Committee and the Chair of the Management Committee of the Black Stars.
